Responsible decisions

Before buying a capuchin monkey: the questions you need to ask

Capuchins are fascinating, intelligent primates. But they are not domesticated companion animals. A decision made during the appealing baby stage can become a decades-long animal welfare obligation.

Can your home meet the needs of a wild primate?

Capuchins need secure, suitable spaces to move, explore, climb and forage. Daily care includes enrichment and opportunities for natural activity. Ordinary pet arrangements are rarely appropriate for a wild primate.

Before considering any purchase, seek independent guidance from experienced welfare professionals and verify the laws applicable where you live.

What happens when a capuchin reaches maturity?

Young monkeys may behave very differently from adults. Territorial behaviour, strong instincts and complex social dynamics require experienced handling and long-term management.

The reality of adult primate behaviour is a key reason CESH advocates education before acquisition.

Can you fund specialist care for decades?

Think beyond food and the initial purchase: veterinary care, appropriately managed diets, secure housing and daily attention can be demanding.

Ask whether you have a qualified primate veterinary contact, an emergency plan and a sustainable lifelong care arrangement.

Why sanctuaries encourage people to learn first

Some animals arrive at sanctuaries after owners discover that their expectations do not match the needs of a wild primate. CESH cares for animals that can no longer safely remain in home situations.
